ARC Advisory Group began conducting research on the global warehouse automation market in 2014. In 2013, ARC estimated the market at $6.4 billion globally, and forecast that it would grow to $9.9 billion in 2019. ARC underestimated the growth by $2 billion!

A forecast is never completely right of course. When it comes to industry market studies, the forecasts tend to have a positive bias - erring on the high side and overestimating the growth. Demand forecasts share a similar bias - they more often forecast more demand than actually appears. While the author knew that ecommerce would lead to accelerated growth for the material handling solutions industry, he nevertheless greatly underestimated the scale of the ecommerce effect. What used to be a sleepy market is now very hot.

ARC will soon be publishing a new 2021 base-year study with a five-year forecast through 2026. In their sneak preview, ARC listed the top 20 warehouse automation suppliers across the globe.
