40 MWh Newport battery storage site set to break ground in coming weeks

The Newport battery storage site is expected to connect to the grid in the third quarter of 2024, adding 40 MWh of storage to help decarbonise the UK’s energy supply.

Field, a leading energy infrastructure company, has now established two essential partnerships with key players to start developing the Newport battery storage site.

Clarke Energy will lead the construction and installation of Field Newport, with Trina Storage providing a fully integrated battery storage system for the project.

The announcement arrives shortly after Field’s £200m funding round led by DIF Capital Partners, with the Newport battery storage site being the latest in a string of company initiatives aimed at reinforcing the UK’s clean energy portfolio.

Speaking on the development, Chris Wickins, Technical Director at Field, said: “We’re excited to be starting construction work at our 40 MWh site at Field Newport.

With Clarke Energy’s comprehensive experience delivering renewable energy projects and Trina Storage’s battery technology, we’re looking forward to Field Newport becoming operational and helping create a more reliable, flexible and greener grid.”

The development of the Newport battery storage site will be led by Clarke Energy, chosen for its exceptional track record in creating complex energy storage projects.

Over the years, Clarke has built more than £3bn worth of projects worldwide, delivering over 8 GWe in gas-fired generation, combined heat & power, backup power, microgrids, biomethane injection, hydrogen generation, and battery storage.

Adam Wray-Summerson, Head of Sustainable Solutions, Clarke Energy, said: “Clarke Energy are proud to be supporting Field in the delivery of the Field Newport battery energy storage system project.

“This facility will help balance the supply of renewable power and demand in the South Wales region whilst ensuring grid stability as we transition to a net-zero future.

“Clarke Energy’s experience in the deployment of renewable power assets around the world and our cradle-to-grave delivery philosophy were some of the reasons why Field selected us as a partner.

“We look forward to developing our relationship with the Field team and to delivering this project successfully.”

Field Newport’s fully integrated battery system will be pioneered by Trina Storage. The system will comprise Tier-1 battery racks, Power Conversion Systems, and an advanced software and control system. The technology will be easily integrated to provide optimal performance and longevity.

“This project not only showcases Trina Storage’s technical expertise but also highlights our unwavering commitment to pioneering solutions that empower and support our valued partners.”

Field is not stopping at just developing the Newport battery storage site. The company’s first battery storage project in Oldham began operating in 2022, providing 20 MWh of storage.

In addition to the Newport project, Field has four more sites in the UK either in or preparing for construction, totalling 210 MWh.

Field is also planning to expand into Italy and aims to develop a multi-gigawatt portfolio of battery energy storage hubs across the country.
